Ice Cream Man By Evan Bollinger

http://www.amazon.com/Ice-Cream-Man-Evan-Bollinger-ebook/dp/B017FSC28W/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1458459037&sr=1-1&keywords=Ice+Cream+Man++By+Evan+Bollinger

“Bollinger constructs a plot similar to a jigsaw puzzle with thousands of pieces that eventually all come together towards the end in a way I never imagined.” https://walkerputsche.wordpress.com/

The story follows main protagonist, Lacy Stamford, a single mum who is trying hard to keep her life and the life of her children on track after the death of her husband several years ago.  All of a sudden Lacy's life is thrown into turmoil when she returns from a simple shopping errand to discover her house is on fire and that this is just the start of the horror she and her children will face in the coming days of the unexplainable house fires, hotter than hot temperatures, spontaneous combustion and people going missing.

Ice Cream Man is a taunt thriller that is infused with horror and sci-fi elements and I would recommend it to readers who enjoy dark themed and thought-provoking fiction.

The Camellia Resistance: By A.R. Williams

http://www.amazon.com/Camellia-Resistance-Camellias-Trilogy-Book-ebook/dp/B00AXMRPL2/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1453901839&sr=1-1&keywords=The+Camellia+Resistance++By+A.R.+Williams

The Camellia Resistance is set in a dystopian future where the USA has become an eroding wasteland after a major pandemic broke out (Herpes) and killed off a large proportion of the population. The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Security are the new government and now rule the smaller population, with the exception of Texas, that remains independent. Willow Carlyle, works for the Ministry and is fast becoming a rising star, as she has spent the majority of her adulthood tracking the spread of sexually transmitted viruses and their impact on the population, until a night of passion with a handsome stranger changes the outcome of her future. Willow is diagnosed with Herpes and is instantly dismissed from the Ministry and struggles to make sense of her undoing until an unexpected encounter with a member from a resistance group, The Camellias (who live outside the Ministry and its strict approved health regulations) expose Willow to an alternative way of life she had no idea existed.  Along the way Willow discovers her real identity and a secret that will shake the Ministry to its very foundation.

Williams introduces the reader to some memorable characters, all of which are conflicted with their own issues to a certain degree.  The narrative is well written and captures the characters hope, fear and anticipation all at the same time, while provoking the reader to finish the first instalment and start the next one immediately. I look forward to the second instalment.

The Eaton By John K. Addis

http://www.amazon.com/Eaton-John-K-Addis/dp/0692272739/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1443697303&sr=1-1&keywords=The+Eaton+By+John+K.+Addis

“Reading John K. Addis was like reading an eighties horror movie.  It’s fast paced, macabre and full of gritty atmospheric settings, along with a relentlessly chilling plot from an author who’s mastered the genre!”

The story begins when Sam Spicer, the main protagonist, becomes the legal owner of the long-abandoned Michigan Central Railway Station in Eaton Rapids, with big dreams of turning it into a hot new martini bar.  However, Sam’s plans come to a sudden halt when he and his friends discover a secret twelve-floor Victorian hotel that’s situated directly underneath the station. In their curious attempts to explore the hotel, they soon discover that it is free from dust and that the old Victorian elevator is fully functional.  Upon further inspection, they soon realise that there were once guests over a century ago that showed signs of leaving in frenzied panic.  After further unusual, mysterious and gruesome discoveries they decide to go in search for answers to find out what happened to the original guests and why the hotel became abandoned, only to discover that they are all being pursued by a creäture with incredible powers, who could trick them, make them see things from their deepest memories to try and prevent them from escaping his abandoned underground world.

The story does shift back in time to Jonathon Wesley, an Archaeologist who gets an exclusive invite to the grand opening of The Eaton, in exchange for his examination and opinion of the owner’s underground discovery.  Jonathon in turn goes on to study and document the petroglyphs with caution as some unforeseen and incredible events soon unfold, that he is convinced are connected to the petroglyphs that he feels depict a tangible threat.  Jonathon’s unique back story alone equips the reader with most of the knowledge and clues that Sam and his friends need to escape the relentless beast of another world that has clearly massacred dozens of people before them.  The biggest question is will Sam and his friends be able to find the answers from the past before it’s too late, and if so will it help them in conquering the beast? Or will their attempts fail and lead to their own demise?

What a fantastic book.  It’s not often I find myself so absorbed in a book that grabs my attention from the onset up until the last page.  I literally couldn’t put it down in fear I would miss something about these wonderfully, yet flawed characters’ that may help them in their impossible mission to discover the truth.  Congratulations’ Mr John K. Addis you have just gained a life-long fan.  I look forward to reading more of your work in the future.

5 Star Book Review: The Revelation Room By Mark Tilbury

“Mark Tilbury’s debut novel is everything I hope for in a gripping psychological thriller and had me turning those pages anxiously throughout the night.  I simply couldn’t put it down!”

The story opens with a disturbing telephone call to Ben from his father who has just been captured by members of a religious cult, who go by the name of, ´The Sons and daughters of Salvation´ Ben’s father was initially hired to investigate the disappearance of a young woman by the name of Emily, as her parents are in desperate need for answers on their missing daughters whereabouts. However, when Ben’s father is captured against his will and close to death, Ben is forced on a deadly mission to step in to try and find his father ASAP, by re-tracing the missing girls last known steps. Ben recruits his best friend, Maddie to help him on his mission, as he is convinced he is too mild and meek to do it alone and is petrified with the fact that the only way to find his father and the missing girl is to go undercover and join the cult.  In order to join the cult Ben and Maddie have to gain Marcuse’s (A cult member) trust.   They make up good cover stories, hoping they will be accepted.  Unaware and unprepared that life as they know it will become a fading memory and their chances of survival on this remote farm, where the chain of command is to worship an evil sociopath are inevitably stacked against them.  They are soon forced to take refuge in a gruesome chamber of horrors (The Revelation Room) which hosts some terrifying discoveries and sinister secrets that may help them or hinder them on their mission to escape as the body count increases and time is running out.

Despite the conflicts, dangers and twists in the story the characters’ are my most favourite part of the novel as they are all uniquely flawed because they all struggle with their own issues and find a way to deal with all the changes around them. One example of this is with the main protagonist, Ben, who lacks self-confidence and is haunted by his childhood accident at the hands of bullies, as he is nicknamed, ´Stutter-Buck´

Tilbury has taken a young insecure man and slowly transformed him into a brave hero that the reader can get behind and root for and I look forward to reading more of Ben’s adventures in the near future. Well done Mr Tilbury for giving us a hero both gritty and moving, and a clever psychological plot that works well to the dramatic end.
